Black Ink Editing provides copy-editing to writers and editors looking to prepare their work for publication or for submission to a publisher. I also work with charities / NGOs needing to prepare reports for presentation within their organisations, or for publication.
I have worked with hundreds of authors, helping them to prepare their texts for publication in academic journals; with students preparing PhD theses for submission to universities; with editors, pooling together and editing chapters for publication in edited collections; and with individual authors working on monographs.
While the academic texts and books on which I work tend to focus on history of science and medicine / nature writing / memoir, I also have a wealth of experience of editing work in company settings, and in the charity sector, preparing NGO reports for publication — persuasive texts presented to a range of shareholders including policy makers and funding bodies.
I have extensive experience of working with non-native writers of English. I can improve the clarity and readability of your text, making the English idiomatic, removing ambiguities and redundancies. I can make your text consistent with any house-style requirements and can adjust the ‘voice’ to the intended readership.
Black Ink Editing also offers layout and design services to writers needing their work formatted for consistency with a publisher’s house-stlyle, ensuring that references and bibliographies are correctly presented and internally consistent; I also offer an indexing service, compiling back-of-the-book indexes with all appropriate sub-entries and cross-references. For authors who need their data presented alongside text —in tables or graphs— I can do any image editing required to combine text and image to their best advantage, having a practised eye for good page layout and design.
